This unit extends the level of complexity of electronic design by integrating and applying core knowledge in electrical and computer systems engineering. You will use linear and non-linear electronics, computer engineering and communications engineering to tackle a group project, apply project management skills and extend your experience of working in groups. The project will extend the design processes introduced in the earlier units to a larger, more complex and less constrained problem that integrates multiple sub-disciplines of your course. The project will be complemented by lectures in project management, including working with teams, project management tools and techniques, and written and verbal communication. Frameworks for analysing the life cycles of systems are introduced. Tools and techniques to aid decision-making are provided.

- ULO1 Generate solutions for subproblems in a complex engineering project by applying in-depth electrical and computer systems engineering knowledge to compose and assess possible solutions, and select suitable solutions for these problems based on available data.
- ULO2 Design suitable methods to analyse and identify possible causes for practical problems encountered in the complex engineering project, and solve these problems through appropriate research methods.
- ULO3 Design a sustainable prototype according to specified project constraints whilst complying with health and safety requirements.
- ULO4 Demonstrate a commitment to achieve the project outcomes by working effectively as an individual and as a member of a team.
- ULO5 Plan the scope and requirements of a project utilising effective project management techniques. Reflect on that plan, and respond to changing requirements.
- ULO6 Generate written reports and oral presentations to communicate the outcomes of the project.

The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of 3-6 hours of scheduled learning activities and 6-8 hours of independent study per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher-directed learning, peer-directed learning and online engagement. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities.
