This unit introduces the principles of thermodynamics and fluid mechanics, laying the groundwork for analysing hydrostatic systems, internal flow systems, external fluid dynamics, and common thermodynamic systems. You will develop an understanding of key fluid and thermodynamic properties such as density, pressure, temperature, viscosity, momentum, energy, and entropy. This understanding will be applied through thermofluid principles including the thermodynamic and conservation laws, property relationships, dimensional analysis, equilibrium, Bernoulli’s theorem, and energy equations.

  1. ULO1 Apply the thermodynamic laws, control mass and control volume analyses, conservation principles, and dimensional analysis to fluid flows and idealised thermodynamic systems.
  2. ULO2 Analyse the performance and behaviour of thermofluid systems by applying principles of energy, work, momentum, and entropy to evaluate efficiencies, losses, forces, and non-dimensional coefficients.
  3. ULO3 Use professional communication practices appropriate to engineering contexts, including written communication, scheduling, and professional conduct.

Active learning - You will actively engage in applying your knowledge, skills, and attributes in interactive, collaborative, and reflective activities.

The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester, typically comprising a mixture of 3-6 hours of scheduled learning activities and 6-9 hours of independent study per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher-directed learning, peer-directed learning and online engagement. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment, and preparation for scheduled activities.
