课程简介

This unit is an advanced undergraduate module, which aims to develop an indepth understanding of current and future internal combustion engines technologies. This unit covers fundamental concepts, principles and applications of internal combustion engines and related components.

The following topics will be covered in depth in this unit:

1. Design features, function and layout of various internal combustion engines

2. Performance, efficiency and energy flow

3. Fuel delivery and gas exchange processes

4. Combustion, heat-release and work transfer

5. After-treatment system, emission and test regulations.

  1. ULO1 Apply fundamental principles relating to the operating characteristics, design layout and friction and lubrication of various internal combustion engines.
  2. ULO2 Assess the engine cycles and heat transfer in internal combustion engines.
  3. ULO3 Evaluate various air and fuel delivery systems, in-cylinder flow processes and combustion.
  4. ULO4 Analyse the thermochemistry of fuels, exhaust flow and emissions from internal combustion engines.
  5. ULO5 Appraise the use of biodiesel blends, biofuels and other renewable fuels for internal combustion engines.

The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of 3-6 hours of scheduled learning activities and 6-9 hours of independent study per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher-directed learning, peer-directed learning and online engagement. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities.
