课程简介

Recent technological advances in DNA analysis now allow the rapid and relatively cheap sequencing of entire genomes of individual organisms. These developments have the potential to revolutionize how we identify genes that control both simple and complex traits. Bioinformatic analysis of genomic data will also be highly influential in shaping our view of how organisms adapt to changes in their environment and how over a longer time-scale, traits such as body size and pattern and physiological and behavioral responses can evolve, leading to the rich diversity of life forms seen today. This unit will explore the use of whole-genome techniques to examine gene regulation, identify the genes controlling both simple and complex traits, determine how individuals and populations adapt to selective pressure and piece together the evolutionary changes that have given rise to complex multicellular life. Such information will increasingly be important in the 21st century for sustainable development of human civilization in concert with a healthy planetary environment. You will acquire relevant laboratory and computer-based skills including genetic database analysis and bioinformatics, forward genetic approaches and mapping and identification of genes controlling complex quantitative traits.

  7. ULO7 Synthesize and critique new discoveries from the scientific literature in genomics.

教学方式与预期工作量

教学方式

Active learning - Laboratory-based classes will complement lectures. You will carry out molecular genetic experimental techniques to gain laboratory skills and practical experience in extracting and analysing DNA (both in the lab and via use of computer and genetic databases) and demonstrating expression ability of regulatory sequences using reporter gene activity. Short tutorials will be held during these classes to further explain detailed technical concepts. You will be required to undertake and complete a set of problem exercises aimed at developing your ability to connect underlying theory with practical activities; undertake laboratory experimental exercises and present your findings in the form of written practical reports with due reference to recent published literature in the field; analyse DNA sequences using computer assisted analysis of genetic databases.

预期工作量

A weekly average of:

• 2- hours applied session;

• 1.75-hours directed online activities;

• 2.25-hours laboratories and

• 6-hours independent study.
