Road engineering

This unit introduces the fundamentals of road engineering theory and practice. It examines a number of issues related to the planning, design and construction of roads, including road planning, the road traffic environment, road design issues, road construction and road pavements, with due consideration to relevant economic, social and environmental considerations.

Active learning - The unit is delivered in a "flipped classroom" format which means that the lectures are recorded and are available in advance of the workshop sessions. Students are expected to have reviewed that material along with other resources on Moodle prior to coming to workshop. Lecture material will not be repeated in class although there will be an opportunity to ask questions if concepts need clarification. Students will then apply that material in a range of activities in the workshops and through the group projects. Students are expected to come to class prepared to engage constructively in the workshop sessions. The main learning approach is active learning focussed on a problem-based approach which requires students to be involved with the workshop tasks/projects as proactive learners.

The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of 3-6 hours of scheduled learning activities and 6-9 hours of independent study per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher-directed learning, peer-directed learning and online engagement. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities.
