课程简介
In this unit you will examine the engineering principles required to transform biological discoveries into scalable, sustainable industrial processes. You will explore how living systems and biological catalysts can be harnessed to produce renewable energy, biofuels, and high-value biomolecules with a reduced environmental footprint. You will bridge the gap between microbiology and chemical systems by studying cell expression systems and microbial growth kinetics. The curriculum covers the design and operation of essential bioprocessing hardware, including bioreactors, centrifugal separators, and chromatographic columns, emphasising the physical and mechanical constraints of handling biological materials. A significant focus is placed on the enzymatic route for biofuel production, where you will analyse enzymatic reaction kinetics and implement rigorous quality control and analytical protocols. From cell disruption and downstream purification to final formulation, this unit provides you with the technical foundation necessary to lead the transition toward a circular bio-economy and a carbon-neutral future.
