课程简介

This unit provides a thorough introduction to process control and simulation. The unit begins with understanding disturbances, why disturbances need to be controlled and possible responses of various systems to a disturbance. The selection of which variables to control, which variables to manipulate and approaches to interactions are covered, together with the most important types of control loops and computer control systems. Topics include common control scenarios - feed back, feed forward, and cascade systems; ratio control; tuning of PID controllers; single loop and multiple loop systems; interactions and decoupling; process simulation and advanced process control.

  1. ULO1 Discern the response to a set-point and disturbance change, including first order and second order responses.
  2. ULO2 Interpret common control scenarios including feedback, feed forward, ratio and cascade systems.
  3. ULO3 Interpret and model simple dynamic systems and understand the approach to modelling more complex systems.
  4. ULO4 Execute basic and advanced control strategies including tuning of controllers, and model-based control.
  5. ULO5 Discuss the issues associated with the use of computer control systems for the implementation of process control.
  6. ULO6 Design a suitable control strategy for a given situation and process.

教学方式

Active learning - This unit will involve a combination of lectures, practical and laboratory classes. Active learning components will be integrated into all aspects of this unit, both in groups and one-to-one activities.

预期工作量

The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of 3-6 hours of scheduled learning activities and 6-9 hours of independent study per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher-directed learning, peer-directed learning and online engagement. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities.
