Climate justice challenges in the Indo-Pacific

Climate change is one of the defining challenges of our time. Globally we are in a race to both decarbonise our economies and adapt to climate impacts and this means driving large changes across systems spanning energy, health, infrastructure, travel, water, industry and finance. At the same time, we are facing a growing inequality gap across communities and countries. Our climate solutions must be designed to more equitably share the costs and benefits of the transition to net-zero, and to address the uneven distribution of disaster risk and climate vulnerability. Within this unit you will develop the necessary skills and the opportunity to explore responses that may effectively address the socio-political and technical challenges of this crisis, including coordinated thought and action across global borders, between established states, sectors and amongst multiple communities.

These challenges and opportunities are particularly evident in the Asia-Pacific region. In this unit, you will explore a unique and transformative experience of interrogating issues that matter to our region and of designing impact-oriented and ethical solutions to the twinned crises of climate change and global inequality. Taught by experts in climate change, development and inequality, this unit brings together students in a simulation of intensive, interdisciplinary online problem-solving. It will equip you with the interpersonal and intercultural skills to work effectively in international teams.

Case-based teaching - This unit includes case-based teaching, where you apply your knowledge and engage in analytical and reflective thinking to solve complex contextual scenarios. Activities are often designed so that there is not one clear answer, but students need to work together to examine, analyse and make decisions to resolve the situation.

Problem-based learning - This unit includes problem-based learning approaches, where you engage in research, integrate theory and practice and apply knowledge and skills to develop viable solutions in response to a problem or set of problems.

Enquiry-based learning - This unit engages you in enquiry-based learning, where you will be encouraged to use your own knowledge to develop and engage in a process of enquiry, study and research to identify areas to be investigated and an approach to doing so.

Active learning - This unit engages you in actively applying your knowledge, skills and attributes in interactive, collaborative and reflective activities.

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
