Planning urban mobility futures

This unit introduces you to contemporary issues in the planning of urban transport systems and urban mobility. The concept of sustainable mobility is introduced along with the steps in the transport planning process. Supply and demand-oriented approaches to addressing transport challenges are reviewed and travel demand management is placed into context. The characteristics of passenger and freight modes are considered and factors influencing the level, pattern and trends in travel demand are examined.

Active learning - This unit incorporates hybrid instructional methods including lectures and computer labs, and an e-learning method that incorporates interactive videos to complement the in-class lab activities.

The main learning approach is active learning which requires you to be involved as a proactive learner in the activities and assignments rather than as a passive listener. There are no right or wrong answers to many of the project questions and activities. This does not imply that any answer is adequate. Some answers will be better than others as they achieve the criteria in a better way.

The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of 3-6 hours of scheduled learning activities and 6-9 hours of independent study per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher-directed learning, peer-directed learning and online engagement. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities.
