Academic integrity and what plagiarism, collusion and cheating mean

Monash University is strongly committed to honesty and academic integrity.

As a Monash student, you’ve joined a community that upholds integrity in all of its academic endeavours, and you’ve made a personal commitment to studying with academic integrity. This means that, whenever you work on an assignment or submit an assessment, you do so honestly, fairly, respectfully and responsibly.

Understand that plagiarism, collusion and cheating bring serious consequences. Not only while you’re at Monash, but well beyond. Such misconduct could harm you personally and professionally for the rest of your life.

Find out what a report of academic misconduct means for you, and what steps you need to take.

Academic Integrity: a compulsory module

To help you maintain academic integrity throughout your studies, we’ve created a short compulsory module. It gives you a basic understanding of academic integrity and points you to important resources that build on this. You’ll learn:

• what academic integrity means • how plagiarism, collusion and cheating differ, and how to avoid them • why academic integrity is important to you, Monash and the University community • how to deal with common scenarios involving academic integrity • where to find resources to grow your knowledge and skills for greater academic integrity.

If you’re unsure whether you need to complete the Academic Integrity module, check in the Web Enrolment System (WES) under Enrolment/Re-Enrolment. Your compulsory modules will be listed in the Status column of the Enrolment Summary screen.

When do I need to complete this module?

You should complete the compulsory modules before classes start, but we’ll send you a reminder (with a deadline) if you haven’t completed them. If you don’t complete them by the deadline, you’ll lose access to Moodle until they are completed.

All students and staff can access the Academic Integrity module in the Compulsory Units Portal (CUP) at any time.

Start the Academic Integrity module

If you have trouble accessing the module, see our troubleshooting section below.

Record of completion

Compulsory modules are not graded, so your grade will remain 0% even after completion. But, once you’ve completed the module, your progress will show as 100% on the CUP dashboard.

Using your student email account: Best to log into CUP with your Monash student email account. That way your record of completion will also appear in WES (after about 15 minutes).

Using your personal email account: If you log into CUP with your personal email account (or a Monash University Accommodation account), your record of completion won’t automatically appear in WES. You’ll need to request that we merge your personal CUP account with your Monash student account by emailing servicedesk@monash.edu with the subject line CUP merge required.

You can check which email address is linked to your account by looking under the profile icon in the top left corner of CUP.

What happens if I don’t complete the module?

If you don’t complete compulsory modules by the deadline, you'll lose access to Moodle until the modules are completed. So make sure you complete them on time.

Troubleshooting

Use this information if you have trouble accessing or completing a module.

• A pop-up blocker will prevent you from accessing the module.Make sure your browser allows pop-ups in the Compulsory Unit Portal (CUP). • If you're having trouble accessing the module: • If the module freezes, and you can't select an option or move on to the next page, you need to email servicedesk@monash.edu: • Once you've completed the module, the Compulsory Units Portal (CUP) dashboard should show the unit as 100% complete. If you signed into CUP with your Monash student account, your progress will be recorded in the Web Enrolment System (WES) - it takes about 15 minutes. If you signed into CUP using a personal email account (or you’re a Monash University Accommodation student), your student record won’t be automatically updated. We’ll need to do a data merge so completion of the module is recorded in WES. Please submit an email to servicedesk@monash.edu with the subject line, CUP merge required, and we'll fix this for you.You can check which email address is linked to your account in CUP under the profile icon in the top left corner. • If you’re still having trouble accessing or completing the module, contact Monash Connect. Make sure to give us:
